Mascherano Hopeful on Messi but Won't Take Risks

Published on Mar, 08 2025

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano remains optimistic about Lionel Messi's return to action but insists that the club will not take unnecessary risks with their star player’s fitness. As Miami prepares to face Charlotte FC, all eyes are on whether Messi will be fit to feature in the crucial fixture.

Messi's Recent Absence
Messi has missed Inter Miami’s last two games due to fatigue rather than a specific injury. The Argentine talisman played three matches in six days, which led the coaching staff to opt for a precautionary rest. While Miami managed a 2-0 win over Cavalier FC in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16, the absence of their captain was felt in terms of overall gameplay and cohesion.

Mascherano's Approach
Speaking ahead of the Charlotte FC match, Mascherano reassured fans that Messi’s condition is improving but emphasized caution in handling his return.

"Leo is much better now. I am the first to know that if Leo plays, we will be stronger. But we have to be careful. He has played a lot of minutes in a short time, and the priority is his health and longevity."
Mascherano acknowledged Messi's importance to the team but reiterated that medical evaluations and the player's own assessment would determine his availability.

Inter Miami’s Performance Without Messi
While Inter Miami managed to secure a win in Messi’s absence, Mascherano admitted that the team's overall performance could improve. The coach highlighted concerns over attacking fluidity and creativity, areas where Messi’s presence makes a significant impact.

"We played well, but we know we can do better. We have to be patient, and the team must learn how to operate effectively both with and without Messi on the field."
Upcoming Clash Against Charlotte FC
With a key MLS fixture against Charlotte FC approaching, Inter Miami fans eagerly await confirmation of Messi’s status. Mascherano and the club’s medical team will continue monitoring his condition before making a final decision.

Despite the uncertainty, Mascherano remains confident in his squad’s ability to perform regardless of Messi’s availability. The primary focus remains on ensuring that Messi is in peak condition for the latter stages of the season, particularly with critical Concacaf Champions Cup and league matches ahead.

Miami supporters will be hoping to see their superstar back on the field soon, but for now, Mascherano’s stance is clear: Messi’s well-being comes first.
