Amorim ‘Really Confident’ in Onana Despite Costly Errors in Draw Against Lyon

Published on Apr 10, 2025

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has thrown his full support behind André Onana following a string of costly errors in Thursday’s 2-2 Europa League quarter-final first leg draw against Lyon. Despite Onana’s mistakes directly leading to both of Lyon’s goals, Amorim insists he remains "really confident" in his goalkeeper as United prepare for a decisive second leg at Old Trafford.

Onana's difficult night began in the 25th minute when he misjudged a curling free-kick from Thiago Almada, allowing the ball to drift untouched into the far corner. The Cameroonian shot-stopper’s woes continued in stoppage time when he failed to properly handle a low strike, parrying it directly into the path of Rayan Cherki, who tapped in Lyon’s dramatic equalizer.

The errors overshadowed a largely strong away performance by United, who had taken the lead through Leny Yoro's first goal for the club before substitute Joshua Zirkzee looked to have sealed the win with a well-placed header in the 88th minute.

Speaking after the match, Amorim defended his keeper and dismissed concerns about Onana’s form.

It can happen. If you play football, you play a lot of games, you can make mistakes,” Amorim said. “I’m really confident in André. We’re focused on the second leg. That’s what matters now.”

Amorim also responded to the pre-match tension between Onana and former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who recently labeled the goalkeeper as “one of the worst in the club’s history.” Onana had publicly rejected the criticism, citing his performances and silverware since joining United. Amorim, however, brushed the matter aside, describing it as a “misunderstanding” and stressing that it had no effect on the team’s mindset.

With the tie finely poised, United will need a composed and commanding performance from Onana in the return fixture. Amorim remains hopeful that his backing will help the goalkeeper regain confidence and lead the team into the Europa League semi-finals.

The second leg is set for next week at Old Trafford, where the pressure will be high but Amorim made it clear: his faith in Onana remains unshaken.
