Andre Onana blasted as one of Man Utd's worst-ever goalkeepers by Nemanja Matic after bold Lyon claim

Published on Apr 09, 2025

Tensions are heating up ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final showdown with Lyon and it’s not just on the pitch. A bold pre-match comment from United goalkeeper André Onana has ignited a war of words, with former Red Devil Nemanja Matic launching a scathing critique of the Cameroonian shot-stopper, branding him "one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history."

Onana’s Bold Claim Sparks Fire

As the two sides prepare to face off in Thursday night’s high-stakes encounter at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium, Onana raised eyebrows when he confidently asserted that United are the superior side.

Of course it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them,” Onana stated, referring to Lyon.

While intended to fire up his side, the comment rubbed Lyon’s Nemanja Matic the wrong way especially coming from a player whose time at Old Trafford has been marred by criticism and costly errors.

Matic Fires Back

Matic, who spent five seasons at Manchester United and now commands Lyon’s midfield, didn’t hold back in his response.

“If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history, you need to take care what you are talking,” Matic retorted. “If this came from David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar, it would make sense. But not from him.”

The Serbian international’s comments echo the frustration of many United fans, who have had a love-hate relationship with Onana since his £47 million move from Inter Milan in 2023. While the former Ajax keeper has shown flashes of brilliance particularly with his ball distribution  his tenure at Old Trafford has been littered with high-profile mistakes, including a string of poor displays that led to United’s early exit from this season’s Champions League group stage.

A Match Charged with Emotion and Legacy

Thursday’s Europa League clash now carries more than just semi-final qualification. The added personal animosity between Onana and Matic has raised the emotional stakes, making this a grudge match to watch.

Manchester United come into the tie in unconvincing form, languishing 13th in the Premier League, while Lyon are faring better in Ligue 1, currently sitting fifth. The game kicks off at 8pm local time and will be broadcast on TNT Sports 1.

A Legacy at Stake

Matic’s critique speaks to a larger issue surrounding Manchester United’s recent struggles a revolving door of inconsistent performances and questionable recruitment. For Onana, this match represents an opportunity to silence critics and prove he belongs among United’s elite goalkeeping names.

For Matic, it’s a matter of pride defending the badge he once wore and ensuring respect is earned, not assumed.
