André Onana Rested for Newcastle Clash Amid Difficult Week On and Off the Pitch

Published on Apr 13, 2025

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana will not feature in today’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with manager Ruben Amorim confirming the Cameroonian has been granted a short rest following a turbulent week both professionally and personally.

Onana, who faced heavy criticism after being at fault for both goals in United’s 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon, has also been dealing with serious off-field matters. His wife, Melanie Kamayou, was recently the victim of a violent robbery in Alderley Edge. The incident has reportedly left the family shaken and under 24-hour protection.

In light of these circumstances, Amorim made the decision to give Onana a few days off to recover mentally and physically. While the keeper’s absence is notable, the manager expressed continued confidence in Onana, signaling that he is expected to return between the posts for the all-important Europa League quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford.

In Onana’s place, Turkish international Altay Bayındır is set to make his Premier League debut. The former Fenerbahçe shot-stopper, who joined United in 2023, has featured in cup competitions but is yet to make a league appearance due to injury and stiff competition. Having recently returned from a nine-game injury layoff, Bayındır will now have an opportunity to step up on one of English football’s biggest stages.

Manchester United are not the only side dealing with significant absences. Newcastle United will be without their manager, Eddie Howe, who remains hospitalized following a recent illness. Assistant managers Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will oversee the matchday duties for the home side.

The fixture is a critical one for both clubs. United are chasing a top-four finish, while Newcastle are eager to capitalize on home advantage and maintain their own European ambitions.
