Antonio Rüdiger Apologizes After Red Card in Copa del Rey Final, Faces Potential Ban

Published on Apr 27, 2025

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has issued a public apology following his controversial red card incident during the 2025 Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, an emotional 3–2 defeat that has left the Spanish giants reeling both on and off the pitch.

In the dying minutes of the intense final, Rüdiger, who had already been substituted, lost his temper and threw an ice pack toward referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea. The German international had to be restrained by teammates and coaching staff to prevent further confrontation, in a scene that marred an otherwise thrilling El Clásico at Seville’s La Cartuja Stadium.

Taking to social media to express his regret, Rüdiger wrote:

"There's definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I'm very sorry for that. We played a very good game from the second half on. After 111 minutes, I was not able to help my team anymore and before the final whistle I did a mistake. Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I have disappointed last night."

The apology comes amid looming disciplinary action. According to the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) disciplinary code, Rüdiger could face a suspension ranging from four to twelve matches if his actions are categorized as “mild violence” against officials. A harsher classification could see him banned for up to six months.

Rüdiger was not the only Madrid player sent off after the final whistle. Lucas Vázquez and Jude Bellingham also received red cards for dissent, further highlighting the frustration within the Madrid camp following a match where they fought back valiantly but ultimately fell short.

Tensions had already been running high before the final. Real Madrid's official television channel had aired pointed critiques of referee De Burgos Bengoetxea, citing grievances from past decisions. This pre-game narrative only amplified the pressure and emotional stakes, contributing to an atmosphere that eventually boiled over on the pitch.

As the RFEF disciplinary committee prepares to review the incident, Rüdiger faces an anxious wait. A lengthy ban would not only affect Real Madrid's preparations for the upcoming season but also leave a significant gap in Carlo Ancelotti’s defensive plans.

For now, Rüdiger’s apology is a first step towards accountability but it remains to be seen how heavy the consequences will be for his moment of frustration in one of Spain’s biggest fixtures.
