Barcelona Confirm Lewandowski Hamstring Injury, Striker Set to Miss Key Fixtures

Published on Apr 20, 2025

FC Barcelona have officially confirmed that star striker Robert Lewandowski has suffered a hamstring injury, dealing a major blow to the club's ambitions during a critical stretch of the season. The injury occurred during Barcelona’s thrilling 4-3 comeback win over Celta Vigo at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Saturday.

Injury Details

Lewandowski was forced off in the 78th minute after clutching his left thigh, sparking immediate concern from fans and teammates alike. Subsequent medical examinations on Sunday confirmed damage to the semitendinosus muscle in his left hamstring. While Barcelona has not provided a definitive recovery timeline, early estimates suggest Lewandowski could be sidelined for approximately three weeks.

What Fixtures Will Lewandowski Miss?

The timing of the injury could not be worse for Barcelona. Lewandowski is now expected to miss several crucial matches, including:

  • Copa del Rey Final vs. Real Madrid (April 26)
  • La Liga match vs. Mallorca (April 22)
  • UEFA Champions League Semi-final First Leg vs. Inter Milan (April 30)
  • Potential La Liga clash vs. Real Valladolid (May 3)

There remains a slim hope that he could return in time for the second leg against Inter Milan on May 6 or the La Liga showdown against Real Madrid on May 11, but much will depend on his rehabilitation progress.

A Major Setback for Barcelona

Lewandowski has been a central figure in Barcelona’s attack this season, scoring an incredible 40 goals across all competitions, including 25 in La Liga where he leads the scoring charts. His absence presents a significant tactical and psychological challenge for manager Hansi Flick, who now faces the prospect of navigating two competitions without his most potent weapon.

Who Will Step Up?

In Lewandowski’s absence, Ferran Torres is expected to take on a greater attacking role. Torres has been in strong form, particularly in the Copa del Rey, where he is among the tournament’s top scorers. Dani Olmo, who recently returned from injury and made an impact in the win over Celta Vigo, is also likely to see increased responsibilities in the front line.

Barcelona will be hoping their attacking depth, combined with tactical adjustments from Flick, will be enough to keep their dreams of a domestic and European double alive during Lewandowski's recovery.
