Chicago Fire Emerge as Surprise Contenders for Kevin De Bruyne Amid MLS Transfer Buzz

Published on Apr 16, 2025

In a bold move that could redefine Major League Soccer's competitive landscape, Chicago Fire have reportedly initiated discussions to sign Manchester City’s midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne on a free transfer this summer. The Belgian international, who has been a cornerstone of Manchester City's dominance over the past decade, is expected to leave the club at the end of the 2024–25 season.

According to multiple reports, including transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chicago Fire have made an initial approach to De Bruyne’s camp, presenting a vision that includes making the 33-year-old the centerpiece of a new era in the Windy City. The club currently has a Designated Player (DP) slot open, allowing them the financial flexibility to offer a lucrative deal without disrupting their salary cap structure.

De Bruyne’s potential arrival would mark one of the most high-profile transfers in MLS history. The midfielder has collected 18 major trophies with Manchester City, including a treble in 2023, and remains widely regarded as one of the most intelligent and creative players in world football.

However, the Fire will face competition. Inter Miami currently hold De Bruyne’s MLS discovery rights, a league mechanism that gives clubs priority in signing international players. Should the Fire wish to move forward, they will need to reach a compensation agreement with Miami to acquire those rights. With Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba occupying all three DP slots in Miami, Chicago arguably have a clearer path to fitting De Bruyne into their roster.

Sources suggest that De Bruyne is seriously considering MLS as his next destination, with interest from both coasts. Though he has not ruled out extending his stay in Europe, he is reportedly intrigued by the league's growth, lifestyle opportunities, and potential to expand his legacy off the pitch.

If the deal materializes, it would represent a seismic shift for Chicago Fire, a club historically overshadowed by bigger-market rivals. Adding a global superstar of De Bruyne’s caliber would not only boost their competitiveness but also significantly enhance their visibility and marketability across North America and beyond.

As the summer transfer window draws closer, all eyes will be on Chicago to see whether their ambitious pitch can convince Kevin De Bruyne to bring his world-class talents to MLS — and to Soldier Field.
