Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca will officially reopen in March 2026 following an extensive renovation, just months before it hosts the opening match of the FIFA World Cup on June 11, 2026. The historic stadium is being modernized to meet updated FIFA requirements while honoring its legacy as one of the most iconic venues in global soccer.

The upgrades include state-of-the-art locker rooms, expanded hospitality areas, improved seating, and enhanced fan amenities. While the final seating capacity has not been confirmed, the renovation aims to preserve Azteca’s cultural and historical identity while ensuring it remains a top-tier venue for the next 40 to 50 years.

Estadio Azteca will make history in 2026 by becoming the first stadium to host matches in three different World Cups—1970, 1986, and now 2026. In addition to the tournament opener, the stadium will stage multiple group-stage and knockout fixtures, serving as a central hub for Mexico’s hosting duties.

The project is part of a wider urban renewal initiative in the Tlalpan borough, with city authorities enhancing infrastructure such as public transit, bike lanes, and roads around the stadium. Mayor Clara Brugada emphasized the long-term public benefits of the project, stating that the developments integrate technology and mobility solutions for everyday citizens.

To maximize fan engagement, Mexico City will also organize events across its 16 boroughs, including a massive FIFA Fan Fest in Zócalo Square featuring live match screenings and interactive experiences to bring communities together during the tournament.

Co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, Mexico is reinforcing its commitment to world-class sporting events. Estadio Azteca’s reopening is not only a celebration of its football legacy but also a statement of Mexico’s readiness to welcome the world once again.
