The latest FIFA world rankings, released on April 3, 2025, present a tale of two teams in the Concacaf region. While the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) remains unchanged at 16th, Canada has reached a historic milestone by climbing to 30th its highest-ever position in the global standings.
Despite a mixed campaign in the Concacaf Nations League, the USMNT has managed to maintain its spot in the top 20. Gregg Berhalter’s side suffered defeats to Panama and Canada during the knockout stages of the tournament, but due to the ELO-style FIFA ranking system which limits the impact of losses in later rounds their overall points remained largely unaffected.
Canada’s rise to 30th in the world rankings is a significant achievement and marks another step forward for a nation that continues to climb in the international football landscape. Under new head coach Jesse Marsch, the Canadians have built on their 2022 World Cup appearance with strong regional performances. Their 2-1 semifinal win over the United States in the Nations League and a competitive 2-0 final loss to Mexico earned them valuable ranking points and recognition.
Mexico, meanwhile, moved up two places to 17th after lifting the Nations League trophy. This minor shuffle solidifies a tightly contested race among Concacaf’s top three teams, with the US still narrowly leading the regional pack.
Globally, Argentina retains the number one position, followed by European powerhouses Spain and France. With the rankings playing a major role in seeding for major international tournaments, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, these positions are more than just symbolic.
The USMNT will now shift focus to its upcoming friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland in June as preparations begin for the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup. With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching and with the U.S. serving as a co-host alongside Mexico and Canada there is a strong incentive to break into the top nine in the FIFA rankings to secure a seeded position for the tournament.
As the international calendar heats up, Canada’s historic ascent and the USMNT’s steady hold reflect an evolving power dynamic in North American football. The road to 2026 is well underway, and every match and every ranking point counts.
