The striker, who was playing for Zhejiang FC in the Chinese Super League, had been enjoying a bright start to the season, scoring four goals in six appearances.

According to local reports, Boupendza was found unresponsive after the fall, and emergency services were unable to save him. Reports suggest that Boupendza had missed a training session and was unreachable before the incident. His brother, who was reportedly present in the apartment and had been involved in an argument with the player, is being questioned by police.

Boupendza's career was one of international journey and undeniable talent. He began his professional path with CF Mounana in Gabon before securing a move to Bordeaux in France. His career breakthrough came during the 2020–21 season with Hatayspor in the Turkish Süper Lig, where he emerged as the league’s top scorer with 22 goals, earning widespread recognition.

The forward went on to play for clubs in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Romania before joining Major League Soccer side FC Cincinnati in 2023. As a designated player, Boupendza made 24 appearances and scored seven goals for the club, helping Cincinnati secure the Supporters' Shield in 2023. His time in MLS was cut short, however, after a reported off-field altercation in August 2024 resulted in a broken jaw and the termination of his contract.

Internationally, Boupendza represented Gabon with pride, earning 35 caps and scoring eight goals. He was a vital part of the national squad during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored a memorable winner against Comoros during the group stage.
