An inquest has officially confirmed that former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell died from a naturally occurring illness, bringing closure to months of public speculation surrounding the death of the beloved football figure. Campbell passed away on June 15, 2024, at the age of 54, following a swift and tragic deterioration in his health caused by a rare heart infection.
Campbell was initially admitted to Manchester Royal Infirmary in January 2024, where he was treated for severe heart and kidney failure. After responding well to treatment, he was discharged, but his condition worsened, prompting a return to the hospital in May. It was then that he was diagnosed with infective endocarditis, a rare but serious infection of the heart lining. Despite best medical efforts, the condition progressed, and Campbell ultimately died of multi-organ failure.
Coroner Zak Golombek, who led the inquest, stated that while there had been a delay in diagnosing the heart infection, it was not a significant contributing factor to Campbell’s death. His condition was already in a critical state by the time the infection was detected. An internal review by the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust supported the coroner's conclusion.
Campbell's death sent shockwaves through the football community. Known not just for his physical presence and goal-scoring prowess, Campbell enjoyed a stellar career that spanned over two decades. He made notable contributions to clubs including Arsenal, Everton, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion, becoming a fan favorite for his leadership and professionalism on and off the pitch.
Tributes poured in from across the football world, with former teammates, clubs, and fans celebrating his life, legacy, and the indelible mark he left on English football. Beyond the goals and accolades, Kevin Campbell was remembered as a gentle giant a man of warmth, generosity, and integrity.
The Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust extended its deepest condolences to Campbell’s family and reaffirmed its commitment to improving patient care in light of the findings.
Kevin Campbell is survived by his son, Tyrese Campbell, a professional footballer, and a footballing community that will long remember his contributions to the beautiful game.
