Spain’s LaLiga has officially secured five places in the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League, following a stellar season for its clubs in European competitions. The confirmation comes as a result of the league’s position among the top two nations in UEFA's association coefficient rankings, which measure club performances across all UEFA tournaments.
LaLiga clubs have impressed throughout the 2024–25 European campaign. Athletic Club’s surge to the Europa League semi-finals and Real Betis’ deep run in the UEFA Europa Conference League have significantly boosted Spain’s standing. These strong performances, combined with Lazio’s recent exit from European competition, ensured that Spain edged ahead of Italy in the coefficient battle.
The fifth Champions League spot is awarded to the top two domestic leagues with the highest coefficient points accumulated during the season. Spain and England currently hold those positions, meaning both leagues will have five representatives in Europe’s premier club competition next season.
But the number could even rise to six. If Athletic Club, currently outside LaLiga’s top four, go on to win the Europa League, they would qualify for the Champions League as titleholders. Should the top four finishers in LaLiga also qualify directly through league position, the fifth-placed team would retain their slot, meaning six Spanish clubs could participate in the 2025–26 edition of the tournament.
This added Champions League place adds further intensity to the domestic race for European spots. Clubs like Villarreal, Real Betis, and Real Sociedad are now not just fighting for Europa League or Conference League qualification but potentially for a golden ticket to Europe’s elite tournament. Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, and even mid-table sides now have renewed motivation heading into the final stretch of the campaign.
Spain’s continental success this season underlines the strength and competitiveness of LaLiga, not only at the top but throughout the league. As fans look ahead to the final rounds of the season, the battle for fifth place could prove as thrilling as the title race itself — with the ultimate reward being a seat at the Champions League table.
