Manchester United produced a sensational extra-time comeback to defeat Lyon 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate in one of the most dramatic Europa League quarter-final matches in recent memory. The rollercoaster clash at Old Trafford kept fans on the edge of their seats and showcased the resilience of a United side determined to stay on course for European glory.

The Red Devils began the night trailing 2-1 from the first leg but quickly asserted dominance. Manuel Ugarte opened the scoring with a powerful strike from distance, and Diogo Dalot doubled United’s lead before the break, making it 2-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

But the tie would take several twists. Lyon responded with second-half goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolás Tagliafico to flip the aggregate back in their favor. At full-time, the aggregate score stood at 4-4, pushing the match into extra time.

Lyon appeared to have sealed it in extra time. Rayan Cherki curled in a brilliant finish, and Alexandre Lacazette calmly converted a penalty, giving the French side a 4-2 lead on the night and a commanding 6-4 aggregate cushion.

However, the drama was far from over. Bruno Fernandes stepped up to slot home a penalty and reduce the deficit. Then, in the 120th minute, Kobbie Mainoo scored the equalizer with a well-placed shot that ignited the home crowd.

Just when it looked destined for penalties, Harry Maguire rose highest to meet a corner and powered in a header in stoppage time of extra time sealing a stunning 5-4 victory on the night and booking United’s place in the semi-finals.

The win sets up a high-stakes showdown with Athletic Club, who also advanced on Thursday night with a 2-0 aggregate win over Rangers. The first leg will be played in Bilbao on May 1, with the return leg at Old Trafford on May 8. The final is scheduled for May 21 at Athletic’s home, San Mamés Stadium.

This dramatic win not only propels Manchester United into the semi-finals but also keeps their hopes alive for Champions League qualification through Europa League success. For the fans at Old Trafford, this was a night to remember a classic European thriller where belief, bravery, and late brilliance stole the show.
