Mbappé, Rüdiger Avoid UEFA Bans and Will Face Arsenal in Champions League Quarter-Final

Published on Apr 04, 2025

Real Madrid have received a major boost ahead of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash with Arsenal, as both Kylian Mbappé and Antonio Rüdiger have been cleared to play after avoiding immediate suspensions from UEFA.

The European football governing body handed the star duo one-match bans for "violating the basic rules of decent conduct" during their post-match celebrations following Madrid's win over Atlético Madrid in the previous round. However, those bans have been suspended for a probationary period of one year, meaning both players are eligible for the first leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Rüdiger was fined €40,000 (approximately $43,300 USD) while Mbappé received a €30,000 fine (approximately $32,500 USD) for their respective actions. Teammate Dani Ceballos was also fined €20,000 (approximately $21,600 USD), while Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior escaped punishment altogether.

UEFA’s decision comes as a welcome relief for Los Blancos, who are already dealing with the absence of Aurélien Tchouaméni, ruled out for the first leg due to yellow card accumulation. The French midfielder’s absence was a concern for manager Carlo Ancelotti, but the availability of Mbappé and Rüdiger significantly strengthens Madrid’s chances.

The match, scheduled for Tuesday at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, is one of the most highly anticipated ties of the quarter-final round. The return leg will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu on April 16.

Real Madrid will be banking on their full-strength squad, with Mbappé expected to lead the line and Rüdiger anchoring the defense against an in-form Arsenal side. With Champions League glory in their sights, the Spanish giants will look to gain the upper hand away from home before the decisive second leg.
