Lionel Messi is set to make his much-anticipated return to the pitch this weekend as Inter Miami prepares to face the Philadelphia Union, according to head coach Javier Mascherano.
The Argentine superstar has been sidelined since March 16 after suffering a muscle strain during a match against Atlanta United. Although he played the full 90 minutes, Messi later reported discomfort that ruled him out of Argentina’s squad during the recent international break.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the crucial Eastern Conference clash, Mascherano provided an optimistic update on his former international teammate: “Leo is good and if God wills and nothing strange happens, he will be called up.”
Mascherano revealed that Messi has been gradually reintegrated into team training and is expected to complete the final session ahead of Saturday’s match. However, while Messi’s name will likely appear on the team sheet, the coach was cautious about his playing time. With a Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal against LAFC on the horizon, Inter Miami is expected to manage his minutes wisely.
“Leo is progressing well,” Mascherano added. “But we also need to be strategic. We won’t take unnecessary risks, especially with such a packed schedule ahead.”
The upcoming match against the Union is expected to be a high-stakes encounter. Philadelphia currently leads the Eastern Conference and is known for its aggressive attacking style a challenge Mascherano fully acknowledges.
“We’re up against one of the best teams in the league,” he said. “They are aggressive, organized, and very effective going forward. But with the crowd behind us and Leo possibly back, we’re hopeful.”
Inter Miami fans are understandably excited about Messi’s return, especially with the team needing momentum both domestically and internationally. His influence has already been transformative since his arrival in 2023, and his comeback could be a timely boost as the club enters a critical stretch of the season.
Whether Messi starts or comes off the bench, all eyes will be on DRV PNK Stadium this weekend as the world watches the return of one of football’s greatest.
