Lionel Messi’s personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has spoken out following Major League Soccer’s decision to ban him from the touchline during Inter Miami matches. The move, initiated by MLS to centralize and control matchday security, has sparked debate around player safety and the league’s handling of repeated pitch invasion incidents.
Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL known for his intense and visible presence beside Messi since the Argentine icon’s arrival at Inter Miami, has been instrumental in intercepting fans who attempt to storm the pitch. Since his appointment, he has drawn attention for his swift reactions, often shadowing Messi closely during games. Now, he’s no longer allowed pitch-side access.
Despite the league’s intervention, Cheuko remains firm in his stance. Speaking to media following the decision, he highlighted what he sees as an alarming trend in the U.S. compared to his years working security in European football. “There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi,” Cheuko said.
According to Cheuko, during his seven years working security in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League, he witnessed only six pitch invasions. In contrast, since arriving in the United States 20 months ago, there have been 16 such incidents involving fans attempting to get close to Messi.
MLS officials argue that matchday security should be managed by league professionals to ensure consistency across all teams and venues. However, many believe Cheuko’s presence was a necessary and effective deterrent especially given Messi’s global fame and the fan frenzy that follows him.
Although Cheuko has been removed from the touchline, he will remain an active part of Messi’s personal security detail, with continued access to locker rooms, mixed zones, and other private team areas. He is expected to accompany Messi off the field, particularly during travel and public appearances.
As Messi continues to draw record crowds and global attention to MLS, the challenge of ensuring his safety without Cheuko on the sidelines may test the league’s own protocols. For now, the man tasked with guarding one of football’s greatest players remains on high alert even from a step further away.
