Paris Saint-Germain have advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after surviving a fierce second-leg fightback from Aston Villa, progressing 5-4 on aggregate despite losing 3-2 on the night at Villa Park.
Holding a comfortable 3-1 advantage from the first leg in Paris, PSG looked to be cruising when fullbacks Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes each found the net early in the match, extending their aggregate lead to 5-1. But what followed was a stirring display of character and determination from Aston Villa, who were spurred on by a deafening home crowd and the presence of Prince William and Prince George in the stands.
Youri Tielemans gave Villa hope with a deflected goal before half-time, injecting urgency into the hosts’ attack. The second half saw Unai Emery’s men step up a gear. Captain John McGinn smashed home their second of the night before Ezri Konsa powered in a header, setting up a nail-biting finish with the aggregate score now at 5-4 in PSG’s favor.
Despite relentless pressure and multiple chances in the closing stages most notably from Tielemans, Marco Asensio, and Marcus Rashford Villa could not find the elusive fourth goal to level the tie. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma stood tall, producing key saves to keep the French champions alive.
After the final whistle, Villa were applauded off the pitch for their spirited performance. Defender Ezri Konsa summed up the mood: “Very proud of the boys. We showed great heart to get back into the game… unfortunately it wasn't enough.” Manager Unai Emery praised his team’s resilience, saying, “We’ve come a long way. This is just the beginning.”
PSG captain Marquinhos acknowledged the challenge they faced. “We knew it would be difficult. Villa are a top side. This competition is unforgiving, but we’re improving and we’re proud to be in the semi-finals.”
Already crowned Ligue 1 champions and into the French Cup final, PSG now await the winner of the quarter-final tie between Real Madrid and Arsenal. For Aston Villa, the European journey ends in heartbreak, but their performance has earned them respect and admiration across the continent.
