Reece James lit up Wembley with a spectacular free-kick as England cruised to a 3-0 victory over Latvia in their latest World Cup qualifier. The goal marked a triumphant return to international duty for the Chelsea defender, who had been sidelined from the national team since 2022 due to injuries.

The breakthrough came in the 38th minute when James stepped up for a set-piece just outside the box. With composure and precision, he bent the ball over the Latvian wall and into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Kristers Zviedris rooted to the spot. It was James’s first goal for the senior England side and one that immediately set the tone for a dominant performance.

“It’s been a long road back,” James said post-match. “To score in front of the fans at Wembley and help the team win it means everything.”

Manager Thomas Tuchel, who coached James at Chelsea and handed him a fresh start with England, praised the right-back’s character and quality. “Reece has overcome a lot. That goal was just a glimpse of what he brings to this squad.”

England extended their lead in the second half through Harry Kane, who converted from close range after a sharp move initiated by Declan Rice. Substitute Eberechi Eze then added a third with a deflected shot in the 76th minute his first international goal.

Though the result was comfortable, Latvia’s deep defensive structure posed early challenges for England. Tuchel acknowledged the need for quicker ball movement and more fluid attacking play, but remained pleased with the clean sheet and the team’s continued momentum.

With this win, England maintains a perfect record under Tuchel, who has now guided the Three Lions to five wins from five since taking charge. The performance of young players like Eze and the return of key figures like James add promising layers to what is quickly becoming a balanced and dynamic squad.

England’s next fixtures will be further opportunities to test Tuchel’s tactical philosophy and build team chemistry ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
