Rodrigo Muniz Outmuscles Van Dijk as Fulham Stun Liverpool in 3-2 Thriller at Craven Cottage

Published on Apr 06, 2025

Liverpool’s Premier League title charge was jolted on Sunday as Fulham pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory at Craven Cottage, thanks to a first-half blitz capped by a dominant finish from Rodrigo Muniz, who bullied past Virgil van Dijk to score the decisive third goal.

Coming into the game on the back of a 26-match unbeaten run and sitting comfortably atop the table, Liverpool looked poised to extend their lead and inch closer to a 20th league title. However, Fulham had other plans.

The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute through Alexis Mac Allister, who unleashed a rocket from distance to beat Bernd Leno. It was a goal worthy of champions, but rather than build on it, Liverpool soon unraveled.

Fulham responded in style just nine minutes later. Ryan Sessegnon, seizing on a defensive error, guided a well-timed volley into the net to equalize in the 23rd minute. That goal shifted the momentum completely, and Liverpool’s defense usually marshaled with authority by Van Dijk began to crumble under pressure.

In the 32nd minute, Alex Iwobi made it 2-1 after Liverpool failed to deal with a high ball. The Nigerian winger showed great composure to pick his spot as Fulham fans erupted in disbelief and delight.

But the moment of the match and arguably the moment of Fulham’s season came just five minutes later. Rodrigo Muniz, with Van Dijk on his back, shrugged off the Dutch defender’s challenge, spun toward goal, and rifled a low shot through Caoimhin Kelleher’s legs to give Fulham a commanding 3-1 lead. It was a goal that showcased strength, skill, and a striker full of confidence.

Liverpool mounted a second-half fightback, and Luis Díaz gave the Reds hope with a goal in the 72nd minute. The Colombian forward latched onto a through ball and finished neatly past Leno. But despite their late pressure, Jurgen Klopp’s side couldn’t find an equalizer.

The result marks only Liverpool’s second league defeat of the season, halting their unbeaten streak and raising questions about their defensive vulnerability in high-pressure situations. Despite the loss, they still sit top of the table with 73 points, 11 clear of Arsenal but the manner of the defeat has left plenty to ponder.

For Fulham, the win is not only a landmark result over the league leaders but also a massive boost to their European hopes. Now sitting eighth with real momentum, Marco Silva’s side is proving they’re more than just mid-table spoilers.

Rodrigo Muniz’s dominant display, particularly his battle with Van Dijk, was symbolic of Fulham’s fearlessness and it may be remembered as the performance that altered the trajectory of both teams' seasons.
