Ryan Gravenberch Withdraws from Dutch Squad Due to Injury

Published on Mar 20, 2025

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has been forced to withdraw from the Netherlands national team due to an injury sustained during Liverpool’s recent Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United. The Dutch international initially joined the squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League quarter-final matches against Spain but was later ruled out after medical assessments confirmed that he would not be fit to play.

The 22-year-old has been an integral part of Liverpool’s midfield this season, featuring regularly under manager Arne Slot. However, he picked up the injury during the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium, where Liverpool suffered a 2-1 loss to Newcastle. Despite initially traveling to the Dutch training camp, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) later confirmed that Gravenberch had left due to lingering discomfort from the knock he sustained over the weekend.

"Ryan Gravenberch has left the Oranje's training camp this evening. The midfielder is still suffering from an injury sustained over the weekend that prevents him from playing in the matches against Spain," the KNVB stated in an official release. His absence is a setback for the Netherlands as they prepare to host Spain in Rotterdam on Thursday before traveling to Valencia for the return leg on Sunday.

Despite losing Gravenberch, Dutch head coach Ronald Koeman confirmed that both Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong are fit and available for selection. The Netherlands will now have to adjust their midfield setup as they take on Spain in these crucial fixtures.

Gravenberch will return to Liverpool for further medical evaluation to determine his availability for upcoming club matches, including the highly anticipated Merseyside derby against Everton on April 2. His potential absence could be a significant blow for Liverpool as they continue their push in the Premier League title race.

The midfielder has faced previous injury setbacks, including an ankle issue in the 2023-24 season that sidelined him for nearly three weeks. Liverpool will be hoping for a swift recovery, given his growing influence in the squad this season. As the club awaits further medical reports, fans will be anxious to see whether Gravenberch can return in time to help Liverpool maintain their momentum in both domestic and European competitions.
