Steve Cherundolo, the man who led LAFC to some of its most decorated years in Major League Soccer, will step down as head coach at the end of the 2025 season. The club confirmed the news on Friday, marking the end of an era defined by silverware, style, and stability.
Cherundolo took the reins in January 2022 and wasted no time stamping his authority. In his debut season, LAFC achieved the historic double winning both the MLS Cup and the Supporters’ Shield. His tenure would continue to be defined by ambition and competitiveness, guiding the Black and Gold to two MLS Cup finals, a U.S. Open Cup title in 2024, and a runner-up finish in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
His current managerial record stands at an impressive 87 wins, 43 losses, and 26 draws across all competitions. In Major League Soccer alone, he has notched 58 regular season victories and boasts an 8-3-1 playoff record. LAFC’s style under his leadership has been fluid, attacking, and tactically astute earning him respect across North America.
The reason behind Cherundolo’s departure, however, is deeply personal. The San Diego native plans to return to Germany, where he spent his entire playing career with Bundesliga side Hannover 96. With over 400 appearances for the German club, and with his wife and children being German nationals, Cherundolo emphasized that this decision was about family.
"After much reflection and discussion with my family, we made the decision that at the end of this year we will return to Germany," he said in a heartfelt statement. "I love Los Angeles and LAFC, but this move is in the best interest of my family, and I will always cherish the memories and people I’ve worked with here."
LAFC’s front office lauded his contributions, with co-president and general manager John Thorrington praising the professionalism, consistency, and legacy Cherundolo leaves behind. “Steve has been a tremendous leader. What he has achieved during his tenure is nothing short of remarkable, and we’re grateful for the culture of excellence he instilled,” he said.
With LAFC currently sitting seventh in the Western Conference and still in contention for silverware in both MLS and the Leagues Cup, Cherundolo remains focused on delivering one final triumph before bidding farewell. The club will begin its search for his successor as the season progresses, aiming to build on the solid foundation he leaves behind.
H
is departure will be felt not just in Los Angeles but across MLS, where Cherundolo has quickly become one of the league's most respected tacticians. Whether his next chapter leads him back into European football or potentially a future role with the U.S. national team setup, his impact on American soccer continues to grow.
