Tonali’s Touchline Thunderbolt Secures Newcastle Win Over Brentford

Published on Apr 02, 2025

Newcastle United kept their Champions League hopes burning brightly with a dramatic 2-1 victory over a spirited Brentford side at St. James’ Park, sealed by a stunning strike from Sandro Tonali that defied belief and left the visitors stunned.

The game was finely poised for long spells, but it was Newcastle who struck first, right on the cusp of halftime. Jacob Murphy broke down the right flank and delivered a low, inviting cross for Alexander Isak to tap home with ease. It was the Swede’s 20th goal of the Premier League campaign, making him the first Newcastle player to hit that milestone in consecutive seasons since Alan Shearer.

Brentford came out swinging in the second half and deservedly found a response. In the 66th minute, Yoane Wissa was brought down by Nick Pope inside the area, and Bryan Mbeumo stepped up to send the Newcastle keeper the wrong way and restore parity. It was no less than the Bees deserved after a spell of sustained pressure that had seen Ethan Pinnock hit the post with a powerful header moments earlier.

But just as Brentford looked to seize momentum, Tonali delivered a moment of magic—or perhaps madness. Out wide on the right touchline and seemingly without options, the Italian midfielder whipped a looping ball toward the far post. Whether it was a cross or a speculative shot, it flew beyond Mark Flekken and into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations in the stands and disbelief across the pitch. Even Tonali admitted afterwards it was “70% a cross and 30% a shot,” but the outcome was 100% spectacular.

Brentford pushed for a late equalizer and had penalty appeals waved away in stoppage time, but Newcastle held firm to claim all three points. The result moves them into fifth place, just one point behind Manchester City with a game in hand, and keeps Eddie Howe’s side firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish.

For Tonali, who has been steadily finding his rhythm after a challenging start in England, the goal was a statement of intent. For Isak, it was another tick in a growing tally that’s placing him among the league’s elite finishers. And for Newcastle as a whole, it was a gritty, hard-earned win that showed they’re still very much in the fight.

Brentford, competitive but ultimately undone by moments of brilliance, remain in 11th. They’ll feel hard done by, but Thomas Frank’s side showed enough to suggest they’ll bounce back quickly.

In a season packed with twists, this was another night of drama—and Tonali’s outrageous goal may just be remembered as one of its most audacious moments.
