Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Osasuna was anything but uneventful, with Jude Bellingham’s shocking red card dominating the headlines. The English midfielder was sent off in the 39th minute after shouting an expletive in frustration following a free kick decision. Referee José Luis Munuera wasted no time brandishing a straight red for dissent, leaving Los Blancos to battle the rest of the match with 10 men.
Despite Kylian Mbappé’s opener, Madrid’s lead was erased in the 58th minute when Eduardo Camavinga conceded a penalty following a VAR review on his challenge against Ante Budimir. The Osasuna forward converted from the spot, leveling the score and leaving Carlo Ancelotti’s men frustrated.
Bellingham’s Red Card Sparks Controversy
After the match, Ancelotti defended Bellingham, claiming the referee misinterpreted his words due to a translation error.
"Bellingham didn’t do anything that deserved a sending off. He said ‘f--- off,’ not ‘f--- you.’ I don’t think that was meant to be offensive," Ancelotti stated.
Bellingham also expressed disbelief at the decision:
"Clearly, I was already turned away, and it wasn’t meant as an insult. I feel like it was a mistake and a misunderstanding. But I apologize to my teammates for making the game harder for them."
Referee Controversies Piling Up for Madrid
This is not the first time Bellingham has been accused of dissent toward referees, and Madrid’s frustration with officiating is growing. The club previously filed a complaint over refereeing errors in their loss to Espanyol and were left fuming over a controversial penalty decision in the Madrid derby against Atlético.
With a crucial Champions League showdown against Manchester City looming, Madrid must regroup quickly. However, their battle with Spanish referees is far from over
