Manchester United ended a disastrous 2024–25 campaign with a 2–0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, but the result did little to disguise the worst season in the club’s Premier League history. Manager Rúben Amorim addressed supporters after full-time, issuing a public apology and promising that “good days are coming.”
A Season to Forget
United finished a shocking 15th in the Premier League table with just 42 points, their lowest top-flight finish since 1973–74 and their worst ever in the Premier League era. The Red Devils registered 17 defeats across the season and won only 10 matches, breaking several unwanted club records.
This decline came despite a managerial change mid-season, with Amorim taking over in November 2024. While the former Sporting CP coach initially brought a fresh tactical outlook, the team’s inconsistency and lack of cohesion proved difficult to overcome.
Amorim’s Post-Match Apology
After the final whistle, Amorim stepped onto the Old Trafford pitch to deliver a heartfelt message to the fans.
“Today, after this disastrous season, I want to tell you the good days are coming. We are Manchester United. We’ve been here before, and we will come back stronger.”
His comments were both a reflection of the gravity of the club’s situation and a rallying cry for supporters to remain united as the club prepares for a massive rebuild.
Europa League Failure and No European Football
United’s season ended without silverware or European qualification. Their 1–0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final extinguished hopes of salvaging the campaign with continental success. For the first time since the 2013–14 season, Manchester United will not participate in any European competition.
Uncertain Futures: Fernandes and Garnacho
The season’s close also ushers in transfer uncertainty. Bruno Fernandes has reportedly drawn interest from Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal, casting doubt over his future at the club. Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho, who was left out of the matchday squad on the final day, has fueled speculation after cryptic social media posts.
Amorim sidestepped direct questions about the players, focusing instead on team unity and a long-term vision.
What Comes Next?
The club is expected to undergo significant changes in the summer transfer window. Several high-earning and underperforming players are likely to depart, while Amorim is believed to be targeting younger, tactically flexible players to fit his pressing system.
United will begin a post-season tour in the Far East, with fans eager to see the early signs of progress. The summer will be crucial not only for recruitment but also for determining whether Amorim retains the board’s confidence moving into the new campaign.
