Ángel Di María Returns to Boyhood Club Rosario Central After Benfica Exit

Published on May 30, 2025

World Cup winner and Argentine icon Ángel Di María is officially returning to his boyhood club, Rosario Central, nearly two decades after his departure. The 37-year-old winger will rejoin the club following his final commitment with Benfica at the FIFA Club World Cup this summer.

A Full-Circle Moment for Di María

Di María began his professional career at Rosario Central in 2005 before launching a glittering European journey. His return marks an emotional homecoming, as he fulfills a promise to end his career where it began.

“Our history together has more pages to write. Welcome home, Fideo,” Rosario Central posted on social media, announcing the move with a heartfelt tribute video that quickly went viral across Argentina.

European Glory, National Hero

Over the course of his career, Di María played for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, and Benfica, collecting:

  • 🏆 30 major club trophies
  • 🏆 Olympic Gold (2008)
  • 🏆 Copa América (2021, 2024)
  • 🏆 FIFA World Cup (2022)

With 136 international caps, Di María is widely regarded as one of the most successful Argentine players of the modern era.

Rosario Central’s Ambition

Rosario Central’s president, Gonzalo Belloso, personally traveled to the United States to finalize the deal with Di María during Benfica’s Club World Cup campaign. The club views his return as not only symbolic but also as a catalyst for renewed ambition in Argentina’s Primera División.

Di María is expected to make his second debut for Rosario Central in July, with ticket demand already skyrocketing in anticipation.
