Arsenal Finalizing Martín Zubimendi Transfer After Meeting £51m Release Clause

Published on May 28, 2025

Arsenal are on the verge of completing their first major signing of the 2025 summer transfer window, with Martín Zubimendi set to join from Real Sociedad after the Premier League club activated his £51 million (€60 million) release clause.

The Spanish midfielder, aged 26, has already agreed personal terms with the Gunners and is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days. The move brings an end to months of speculation linking Zubimendi with top clubs across Europe.

Tactical Fit: A Midfield Mastermind

Zubimendi has long been admired for his tactical intelligence, defensive discipline, and precise distribution. His style has drawn comparisons to legendary holding midfielders Claude Makelele and Sergio Busquets, making him a natural fit for Mikel Arteta’s system at Arsenal.

The midfielder’s arrival will fill the void left by Jorginho, who recently departed for Flamengo, and add much-needed control and flexibility to Arsenal’s midfield unit.

Spanish Connection and Arteta’s Influence

Despite late interest from Real Madrid and earlier links to Liverpool, Zubimendi has opted for North London—a decision reportedly influenced by Arteta’s long-term project and the chance to reunite with former Real Sociedad teammate Martin Ødegaard.

The midfielder has made over 200 appearances for Real Sociedad and has earned 15 international caps for Spain, showcasing his experience at the highest levels of club and international soccer.

 Arsenal's Transfer Plans Heat Up

The acquisition of Zubimendi is expected to kick off a busy summer for the Gunners. Arsenal are reportedly still in pursuit of a top striker, with names like Viktor Gyökeres and Benjamin Šeško being closely monitored.

In parallel, the club is working to secure contract extensions for key stars, including Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, to ensure long-term squad cohesion.

Announcement Imminent

Barring any last-minute complications, Arsenal are expected to officially announce Zubimendi’s signing within days. The move represents a significant statement of intent from the Gunners, as they aim to build a title-contending squad for the 2025–26 Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
