Champions League: PSG Advance Past Arsenal as Hakimi Strikes and Donnarumma Shines

Published on May 07, 2025

Paris Saint-Germain are through to the UEFA Champions League final after a commanding 2-1 second-leg win over Arsenal, completing a 3-1 aggregate triumph. Achraf Hakimi’s decisive second-half goal and Gianluigi Donnarumma’s stellar saves proved pivotal as Luis Enrique’s men showcased composure and clinical execution to secure their Munich ticket.

Arsenal, trailing from the first leg, opened the match with intense high pressing and early control. Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka tested PSG early, but Donnarumma’s reflexes kept the Parisians ahead, producing two crucial saves in the first 20 minutes. Despite their bravery, Arsenal lacked the cutting edge needed at this elite level.

In the 27th minute, Fabian Ruiz capitalized on a loose clearance and rifled in a long-range strike past David Raya, putting PSG in control. The goal shifted momentum, and PSG settled into a more compact, counter-attacking approach. Manuel Ugarte’s midfield coverage and Marquinhos’ leadership at the back frustrated Arsenal’s rhythm.

Ousmane Dembélé came off the bench to stretch the field, but the key moment arrived in the 72nd minute. Thomas Partey’s costly turnover was punished by Hakimi, who surged forward and buried a precise finish to put PSG 2-0 up on the night. It was a signature moment of PSG’s efficient counter-pressing model.

Arsenal responded through Bukayo Saka, who slotted home in the 76th minute, but PSG’s defensive structure held firm in the closing stages. Lucas Hernández and Danilo Pereira closed down spaces and denied the Gunners any late heroics.

PSG now prepare for a blockbuster Champions League final showdown with Inter Milan on May 31 in Munich. With Luis Enrique at the helm, PSG are one game away from securing their first-ever European crown.

Arsenal exit the tournament with pride. Their performance was courageous, but the lack of execution in key moments proved costly. Mikel Arteta’s side will take lessons from this run as they continue their European evolution.
