Chelsea are on the brink of completing a $38 million move for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, as the club looks to accelerate its rebuild under newly appointed manager Enzo Maresca. The Blues have reportedly activated Delap’s release clause following Ipswich's relegation from the Premier League.
Delap Chooses Chelsea Over Rivals
The 22-year-old, who scored 12 goals in 37 league appearances last season, was a hot commodity on the market, attracting interest from Manchester United, Newcastle, and Everton. However, Delap opted for Chelsea, citing the club’s Champions League qualification and a potential reunion with Maresca—his former academy coach at Manchester City—as key factors in his decision.
Board Committed to Supporting Maresca’s Vision
Chelsea’s hierarchy, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, remains committed to investing in a young, high-potential squad. Following their UEFA Europa Conference League triumph, the club is keen to build on its momentum as they prepare for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Maresca has been assured of continued support in the transfer market. In addition to Delap, Chelsea are keeping tabs on several forwards, including Hugo Ekitike (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig). However, valuations in excess of $45 million for both players may prove challenging unless the club makes room through player sales.
Defensive Overhaul Also Planned
Defensive reinforcements are also in the works. Chelsea are monitoring Ajax's highly rated center-back Jorrel Hato. Meanwhile, players like Benoît Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, and Axel Disasi are expected to be available for transfer as the club aims to trim the squad and balance its wage bill.
The West London club has already secured deals for top young prospects including Willian Estêvão, Kendry Páez, and Dário Essugo, underlining their long-term strategy to dominate both domestically and in Europe.
No Immediate Title Pressure
While expectations remain high, the Chelsea board has made it clear that Maresca will be given time to implement his system. The priority is consistent progress, particularly in European competitions, rather than immediate Premier League silverware.
