Guardiola Blasts Premier League for 72-Hour Turnaround After FA Cup Final

Published on May 18, 2025

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has openly criticized the Premier League’s fixture congestion, taking aim at the league’s decision to schedule a crucial match against Bournemouth just 72 hours after City’s FA Cup final.

City, still reeling from their clash with Crystal Palace at Wembley, now face Bournemouth in a game that could decide their Champions League qualification hopes. Guardiola described the scheduling as “unacceptable,” citing risks to player welfare and the integrity of competition.

“We are going to play Tuesday night against one of the most intense and physical and powerful teams in the Premier League,” Guardiola said. “It’s tough.”

Guardiola Questions Fixture Fairness Compared to Spurs

The Manchester City boss did not shy away from comparing his team’s situation to Tottenham Hotspur, who were granted extra rest before their Europa League final, with their domestic fixture moved forward.

“Tottenham played on Friday before their final. Good decision. I'm not being sarcastic. Very good,” Guardiola commented pointedly.

The remark underlined his frustration that City were not afforded similar flexibility, despite also juggling domestic and European objectives.

Broadcaster Influence and Player Fatigue
Beyond fixture timing, Guardiola also took aim at broadcasting interests, suggesting commercial priorities were driving decisions that compromise player health.

“People say it’s for broadcasters, fans, or more followers. Maybe they’re tired of seeing us,” he added, highlighting the lack of consideration for player recovery times and performance standards.

City’s Champions League Push at Risk

With the Premier League season reaching its climax, Manchester City remain locked in a tight battle for a top-five finish. Any slip-up in their match against Bournemouth could prove costly.

Guardiola’s remarks reflect a broader discontent among managers regarding the growing intensity and unbalanced fixture calendars, especially during congested periods involving domestic cups and European commitments.

Final Word:

Guardiola’s outspoken comments reignite the debate on Premier League scheduling, player fatigue, and the growing divide between sporting integrity and commercial demands.
