James Maddison to Miss Remainder of Season with Knee Injury in Major Blow for Tottenham

Published on May 07, 2025

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that star midfielder James Maddison will miss the rest of the 2024–25 season after sustaining a knee injury during the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semifinal clash against Bodø/Glimt. The England international was forced off in the 65th minute of Spurs’ 3–1 win in North London after what manager Ange Postecoglou described as a “tweak” to the knee—an issue that has now proven far more serious.

In a pre-match press conference ahead of the second leg in Norway, Postecoglou delivered the blow: “He’ll miss the rest of this season, and it’s disappointing for him because he’s been a real catalyst for us.” Maddison, who has recorded 12 goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances this campaign, has been one of Tottenham’s most influential players, often driving the team's creativity and tempo.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Spurs. Already dealing with an injury to Swedish teenager Lucas Bergvall, who is also out for the season, Tottenham face mounting pressure both in Europe and domestically. While they hold a 3–1 aggregate lead going into the second leg against Bodø/Glimt, their Premier League form has been dire—they currently sit 16th in the table, dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Despite these setbacks, hopes remain high in North London that European glory could salvage their season. Victory in the Europa League would secure Tottenham’s first piece of silverware in 17 years and guarantee a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League, regardless of their league finish. The winner of their semifinal tie will face either Manchester United or Athletic Bilbao in the final on May 21.

With Maddison sidelined, the creative burden now shifts to the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke, who will be expected to step up in the midfield and final third. The road ahead is tough, but Tottenham’s Europa League run still presents a lifeline in an otherwise difficult campaign.
