Luis Enrique Embraces 'Farmers League' Tag as PSG Reach Champions League Final

Published on May 07, 2025

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has fired back at critics by cheekily embracing the "farmers' league" label often thrown at Ligue 1, after leading PSG to the 2025 UEFA Champions League final. The Parisians defeated Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate in the semifinals, silencing doubters and reinforcing their European credentials.

“The league of farmers, no? We are the league of farmers. But it's nice,” Enrique said with a smile in his post-match press conference. “We are enjoying the result and the compliments from everybody speaking about our mentality and how we play.”

PSG’s route to the final included wins over four Premier League clubs—Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and most recently Arsenal—making Enrique’s quip a sharp counter to long-standing stereotypes about French domestic football. The term “farmers league” has often been used to diminish Ligue 1’s competitiveness, but Enrique's squad has flipped the narrative on its head with a run that included dominant tactical displays and standout individual performances.

Responding to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta—who claimed his side had been the best in the competition—Enrique was respectful but firm: “Mikel Arteta is a great friend, but I don’t agree at all. They play the way they love to play, but over two legs, we scored more goals. That is the most important thing.”

With the Ligue 1 title already wrapped up and a Coupe de France final clash against Reims scheduled for May 24, PSG are now targeting a historic treble. Their season will culminate in Munich on May 31, where they will face Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

Luis Enrique’s playful jab is more than just words—it’s backed by results. PSG’s performances this season have not only lifted the club’s European ambitions but also restored pride in Ligue 1's global standing.
