Arsenal’s Champions League dream came to an end with a 3-1 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals, but manager Mikel Arteta made a bold statement after the final whistle—declaring his side had been the best team in the competition.
“I don’t think there’s been a better team in the competition from what I’ve seen,” Arteta said. Arsenal created more chances and posted a staggering expected goals (xG) tally of 4.77 across the two legs against PSG, yet only managed to convert once, falling short where it mattered most.
In the second leg at the Parc des Princes, the Gunners came out firing, dominating possession and testing PSG’s backline early. Despite their strong start, it was the French side that made their moments count. Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring with a stunning long-range strike, and Achraf Hakimi added a second after capitalizing on a defensive lapse. Bukayo Saka responded for Arsenal, but it proved too little too late.
Arteta revealed that PSG staff privately admitted “the best team lost” after the match, reinforcing his view that Arsenal’s overall play had deserved more. The Gunners impressed across their Champions League campaign, especially considering it was their first appearance in the competition in six years.
“We’ve come a long way,” Arteta noted. “This team has shown it belongs on the biggest stage. The experience will make us stronger.”
Arsenal’s European exit shifts focus back to domestic matters, where they continue to challenge for a top Premier League finish. Though the campaign ends in disappointment, Arsenal have re-established themselves as a major force in Europe—one ready to compete again next season.
