Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has doubled down on his belief that his side “deserved” to beat Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semi-final, despite a 3-1 aggregate defeat. The Gunners boss pointed to key statistics—including expected goals and total chances created—as evidence that Arsenal were the superior team across both legs.
Speaking after analyzing the two matches, Arteta stated, “It’s 100 percent clear to me. We had better stats, better xG, more chances created. When you look at the game beyond the final score, it’s obvious who was better.”
Arsenal lost 1-0 at the Emirates and 2-1 in Paris, but dominated large spells of both encounters. According to match data, the Gunners outshot PSG, had a higher expected goals tally, and forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into several crucial saves. Arteta emphasized that Donnarumma’s performance was decisive in keeping the French side ahead.
“When you analyze the important metrics that normally win you matches, it’s crystal clear. Their goalkeeper was man of the match both nights,” Arteta added.
Despite the disappointment, the Arsenal boss expressed pride in his squad’s progression, noting that several key players were experiencing their first Champions League semi-final. “I’m extremely proud, but also frustrated. We’ve come so far and played so well, but we couldn’t make that final step,” he said.
PSG manager Luis Enrique dismissed Arteta’s comments, pointing out that the only stat that matters is the scoreline. “We scored more goals than them—that’s what football is about,” he said. PSG now advance to the final in Berlin, where they will look to lift their first-ever Champions League trophy.
As for Arsenal, attention now turns to the Premier League, where they face Liverpool in a crucial fixture. Arteta is hopeful his side will channel the frustration into a strong finish to the season and another deep European run next year.
