MLS Suspends Minnesota United’s Joseph Rosales for Discriminatory Language

Published on May 14, 2025

Major League Soccer (MLS) has handed Joseph Rosales of Minnesota United FC a three-match suspension for violating the league’s Joint Non-Discrimination Policy during an incident in a match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 27.

The disciplinary action follows an investigation into an on-field altercation between Rosales and Vancouver forward Emmanuel Sabbi, during which Rosales was alleged to have used discriminatory language.

While Rosales has denied the use of any slurs, he acknowledged the intensity of the moment and issued a statement expressing his disagreement with the outcome while affirming his respect for the process.

Rosales Suspension Details and MLS Response

Rosales will miss key matches against Houston Dynamo FC (May 14), St. Louis CITY SC (May 17), and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on May 21. His reinstatement is conditional upon completion of a restorative practices program required by the league.

MLS reaffirmed its commitment to promoting respect and inclusion, stating:

“We take violations of our Non-Discrimination Policy seriously and are committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment for all participants.”

Minnesota United’s Reaction to the Ban

Minnesota United FC released a statement voicing support for Rosales, indicating that the club had conducted its own internal review and stood by the midfielder.

“We have spoken extensively with Joseph, teammates, and staff. While we understand the concerns raised, we believe in Joseph’s integrity and character,” the club said.

Implications for MLS and the League’s Integrity

This case marks one of the most high-profile MLS disciplinary actions in 2025 and serves as a reminder of the league's zero-tolerance approach to misconduct, particularly on issues of discrimination and respect.

The MLS investigation into on-field misconduct continues to highlight the league's growing efforts to uphold professionalism and maintain accountability in all competitive settings.
