Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that the 2024–25 campaign has been the most difficult of his 17-year managerial career, citing emotional strain, poor form, and relentless expectations as key challenges during a turbulent season at the Etihad.

Guardiola, who has guided City to four consecutive Premier League titles prior to this year, opened up about the struggles his team has faced. “It’s been the most difficult season, that’s for sure,” he told reporters. “Much more demanding emotionally and mentally than any I’ve experienced before. When you’re not winning, everything becomes harder—preparation, team spirit, the dressing room mood.”

City’s form took a noticeable dip from late October, managing just one win in a 13-match stretch across competitions. The club also suffered a shock early exit from the UEFA Champions League, falling to Real Madrid in the knockout round play-offs, a setback that dealt a heavy blow to their continental ambitions.

Injuries have also plagued Guardiola’s squad, with influential players like Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri missing key stretches of the campaign. The absences disrupted City’s midfield control and overall tactical cohesion—hallmarks of Guardiola's sides in previous years. Additionally, Erling Haaland's form has been inconsistent, amplifying the pressure on the team’s attacking output.

With just three Premier League matches left, Manchester City sits third in the table and faces a tight race to secure a Champions League qualification spot. They will look to bounce back with a win against bottom-placed Southampton this weekend, which could see them draw level with second-place Arsenal.

Despite the disappointment, Guardiola remains committed to restoring City’s competitive edge. “We have to finish strong and regroup,” he added. “Seasons like this test you, and we’ll learn from it.”

While the 2024–25 campaign may not end with silverware, it stands as a pivotal moment for Guardiola and City—a reminder of how even elite clubs face adversity, and how resilience often defines greatness.
