St. Louis City SC Sack Head Coach Olof Mellberg After Poor Start to 2025 MLS Season

Published on May 28, 2025

St. Louis City SC have officially parted ways with head coach Olof Mellberg following a disappointing start to the 2025 Major League Soccer campaign. The decision, announced just 15 matches into the season, marks the club's second coaching change in less than a year.

Mellberg, who was appointed in November 2024, exits the role with a record of 2 wins, 8 losses, and 5 draws, leaving the team languishing in 14th place in the MLS Western Conference standings. The team has struggled on both ends of the pitch, scoring just 11 goals—one of the league’s lowest tallies.

Poor Results and Style Mismatch Led to Departure

According to Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel, the decision to sack Mellberg went beyond the team's results.

“We have a style and identity that must be maintained,” Pfannenstiel said. “Unfortunately, things weren’t aligning under Mellberg’s leadership.”
Club President and General Manager Diego Gigliani also acknowledged Mellberg’s commitment but emphasized that the club could not continue down the current trajectory. Injuries, lack of cohesion, and underwhelming performances were all cited as factors behind the move.

David Critchley Appointed Interim Head Coach

Stepping into the void is David Critchley, who previously coached St. Louis City2 in MLS NEXT Pro. Critchley has been part of the organization since 2021, initially working within the youth academy. His recent success with City2—where he led the team to a 6-4-1 start—has made him a logical choice for interim head coach.

He will be supported by Baggio Hušidić, promoted from the City2 coaching staff, while John Hackworth, the club’s technical director, will temporarily take over City2 duties.

What’s Next for St. Louis City?

St. Louis City SC are preparing for their next fixture against the San Jose Earthquakes, scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at Energizer Park. The club hopes that a change in leadership will spark a turnaround in form as the second half of the season approaches.

This latest sacking marks the fourth coaching change in the club's short history, a concerning trend for a franchise still seeking long-term stability and a winning formula.
