Trent Alexander-Arnold Confirms Liverpool Exit Ahead of Real Madrid Move

Published on May 05, 2025

Trent Alexander-Arnold has confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the 2024–25 season, ending a two-decade journey with the club he joined at the age of six. The England international is set to join Spanish giants Real Madrid on a free transfer after declining a contract extension at Anfield.

In a heartfelt message to fans, Alexander-Arnold described his time at Liverpool as “my whole world,” expressing deep appreciation for the club, teammates, coaches, and supporters. His departure brings an emotional close to a chapter that saw him transform from a local academy product into one of Europe’s finest right-backs.

Across 352 appearances, Alexander-Arnold scored 23 goals and provided 92 assists. He was instrumental in Liverpool's modern golden era, winning two Premier League titles, a Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. Known for redefining the right-back role with his creativity and passing range, he became an icon under Jürgen Klopp’s leadership.

Liverpool had hoped to keep the 26-year-old, offering a lucrative new deal, but Alexander-Arnold opted for a new challenge. Real Madrid, who had previously tried to secure his services in January, have now succeeded in landing the defender. The move comes at a key moment for Los Blancos, who are rebuilding their backline following Dani Carvajal’s ACL injury.

The Spanish side has arranged to include Alexander-Arnold in their Club World Cup squad in June, with Liverpool approving an early release. The deal includes a one-time payment from Madrid and Alexander-Arnold waiving his final month’s salary, giving Liverpool a small but symbolic financial gain.

For Liverpool, the focus now shifts to succession planning. Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are the leading internal candidates, but a move for a new right-back this summer remains highly likely as part of the club’s defensive restructuring under new sporting director Richard Hughes.

As Alexander-Arnold prepares to join a new Galáctico era at the Santiago Bernabéu, he leaves behind not only silverware and statistics but a legacy of passion, local pride, and transformative impact. His journey from West Derby to world-class serves as a testament to Liverpool’s academy system—and a reminder that even icons must move on.
